World War I German bayonet / scabbard
with
original leather belt
Fine condition
You are
offerding on a vintage World War I German bayonet and scabbard with its original
leather belt. It was brought home from the war by my wife's grandfather, who
served in the famous U.S. 32nd Division, Company B, 125th Infantry from Michigan.
I have
consulted a prominent bayonet expert who provided the following information
to accompany the photos:
- The
bayonet is a German M1884/98 Second Pattern, used with the famous 8 mm. Mauser
Gewehr 98.
- The
maker mark is partically obscured. In full it would read "F. Koeller
& Co." over "Ohligs" over "Solingen." This was
the firm of Franz Koeller, which was located in Solingen. Ohligs is a borough
or suburb within Solingen (although it once was a separate small town). The
Koeller family had been in the sword and cutlery business since the 1400s.
- This
bayonet would have been made 1915-17, as Koeller changed over to producing
the M1898/05 bayonet during 1917.
- The
belt buckle is also First World War period, featuring the Imperial crown in
the center.
Condition:
The blade, scabbard and belt are all in fine condition. The belt leather is
supple and not cracked. Two of the buttons have fallen off. One is lost but
I have the other and will include it in this sale lot.
All together,
these vintage items will make a great addition to the collection of any World
War I memoribilia enthusiast.
