You are offerding on a nice WWI German Army trench knife. These were issued to soldiers both as weapons and for practical use. This one is decent condition though its leather hanger strap is broken off and most of the sheath's paint is gone.
The base of the blade is marked to the firm of GOTTLIEB HAMMESFAHR
SOLINGEN. The Blade's cutting edge is extremely sharp.
You will note extensive pitting both on the sheath as well as the blade. This is not due to rust but rather resulted from a crude manufacturing process. The knife was deliberately made in this condition as a measure to speed up production, which would seem to suggest it was made during the later stages of the war. In fact, if you look closely at the knife's sheath, you will see traces of the original blueish gray paint inside the low points of the pitting, which is about the only place it didn't rub off. Many German guns from 1944-45 period display similar crude finishing.
