As women manned the assembly lines they needed to feel the job they were doing was important-difficult though it might be. In order to motivate the women workers, various government agencies produced posters such as this one.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: By the end of World War II over six million women had become real-life Rosies as welders, riveters, truckers, munition workers, mechanics and every other job needed to feed the war machine. Many of these women workers returned to homemaking after the war, but Rosie The Riveter had a second career. In the 1970s, Rosie The Riveter began an iconic career as the symbol for the emerging battle for women's rights, particularly in the work force.
