Captain Arthur Raymond Brooks [1895 1991] was an American World War 1 fighter ace and aviation pioneer. He began his military career in 1917, and was sent to France upon the entry of the United States into worldWar I. He became flight commander of the 22nd Aero Squadron and was credited with 6 victories during the war. On September 14, 1918, while on solopatrol he was attacked by eight German Fokker planes. During theair battle he shot down four planesand even with his plane severely damaged he was able to escape the last four pursuing planes. He was later only credited with two planes but was recommended for the Medal of Honor and ultimately awarded theDistinguished Service Cross for his actions. This well known dogfight was featured in the series called ''Dogfights'' and was airedon the History Channel. The following, I believe you will agree is an amazing story about Captain Arthur Brooks. In 1985, at the age of 90, he visted the Smithsonian Institution;s National Air and Space Museum's restoration facility. Upon entering the hangar he spotted a tattered World War I SPAD XIIII airplane, the same type he flew during the war. As he drew closer he discovered it was his actual airplane and proceeded to climb into the cockpit until he was approached by a restorationtechnician who in a stern manner demanded he leave. Captain Brooks then advised the technician of the planes history and its combat patrols and that this particiular plane was used by him. The technician was well aware of the planes history and asked the old gentlemen to wait while he summoned the musuen curator. The final straw which would end any dought about the old gentlemens story came when Captain Brooks advised them the aircraft's serial number which was not immiatedly visable. Less then two years later, Captain Brooks fully restored SPAD was unveiled with great celebration.
