This week's sale from SANDMAN OVERHAUL is for this very nice Allyn Sales P-51 Chrome Ashtray model. Amazingly, this is an early, first production unit that somehow survived the rigors of being an active ashtray at Cleveland-Hopkins Airport for over 60 years. It is in pretty nice condition so it did not get the whole overhaul treatment. For instance, though they are a tiny bit blemished, Ileft the ORIGINAL red-border national insignia (Stars-n-Bars) intact as it is Very Rare to find themlooking this well. Review the photosto confirm. Though this model is not perfect, it is much better than most that you see here on so a real stunner none-the-less.It has been upgraded so that it may be the focal pointin your display. Please note the following...
1) The original, poorly designed thin cast metal props were long gone.No problem as they have been replaced bymy proprietary set of resinscale prop blades that actual can flex and are evenreplaceable... just in case.
2) The original cockpit insert and goofy canopy were long gone as well. Good ridence, both were out-of-scale and poorly designed. Instead, I have added one of my own full cavity canopy inserts that even features aluminum framing. It will be hard to lose this beauty as it is desgned with a snug fit! It has the added feature of being created using vintage, original, WWII Rohmand Haas factory canopy plexiglas so a chunk of WWII is actually on board.
3) The original and rareblack glass ashtray was missing as they usually are. I secured a very nice replacement that fits the bill. It is also black glass and nests just about dead-on like the original. It has a few tiny chips but its hard to see them (see pic #6).
4) The little "fish-paper" friction pad that sits between the body spring and the arm's ball was missing. This is what allows the airplane to remain fixed in any postion. No problem again as I have discovered a new hard plastic unit that works better than the original. Now you can set the bird in any angle and she will stay put!! (Note the many positions in the photos)
5) On the bottom of the metal tray were three hard-to-find rubber feet so that the base doesn't scratch the table surface. No problem!! Here's the clue of the year, buy a box of #2 pencils and carefully remove the pink erasers, Yup, they are a perfect fit!! (See pic #8)
6) I generally cleaned up the whole assembly but it still has its share of minor chrome pits. An afternoon with a can of Nevr-Dull polishing cotten and some extra buffingwill do this Allyn Ashtraywell. Put in a little sweat-equity and you will love this bird all the more!!
