The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality reproduction print of a powerful World War I poster by famed artist T. A. Steinlen [see mini-bio below]. Steinlen had great empathy for the infantrymen (or poilu) and it certainly shows through in this unique drawing he did for the national day of recognition for them. He chose to portray two infantrymen crossing a field. One of them is a grizzled bearded older man who is smoking a pipe. The second solder is more unusual because he has a rose clutched in his teeth, perhaps given to him by a citizen.
The headline reads: Journee de pouli [Translated: Infantry Day.]
Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1959 – 1923) was born in Switzerland, but is mostly identified with the Montmarte part of Paris that was the home to some of the most important and influential artists of the era. Steinlen, along with Toulouse-Lautrec, Cheret and Mucha, established the tradition of the Art Nouveau poster during the early twentieth century. Steinlens work roughly falls into two categories. On one side is the large body of work, much of it for commercial interests, showing a love for cats, children and the joys of life. These include many of the works done for various cafes and dance halls in the Montmarte area—including some of the singers, dancers and prostitutes (and their bourgeois patrons) who were his friends. These are among the most popular today. However, Steinlen had a deeper, even darker, side that he also expressed artistically. Politically, Steinlen, like many of the artists of this era, was a committed socialist and anarchist. The political tone can be seen in his works depicting the sordid parts of life. His World War I posters certainly fall into that category. While many of them were produced at a time of patriotic zeal rampant throughout Europe, most of the subjects are the soldiers, refugees and other victims of the war and the political systems of Europe.
