(Sixth image provided to show the painting that exists in the more well known version of this photograph).Not only did this photo win Halsman First Prize in the 1948 Graflex Photo Contest, but the final version of it also appeared on pages 4 and 5 of the August 9, 1948 issue of LIFE magazine.
An exceedingly rare and very early, vintage printing of Philippe Halsman's masterpiece and collaboration with the great Surrealist artist Salvador Dali, "Dali Atomicus".
There are several things that make this particular print incredibly unique:
1. It was printed no later than 1949 and predates the version used in the 1948 LIFE article (the more common Halsman stamped and numbered edition of 250 wasn't printed until 1981).2. It was sent out to announce Halsman's winning of the 1948 Graflex Photo Contest (First Prize Professional Action Class).3. The final version of this photo had all of the wires that suspended the easels and stool painted out. But in this version the wires that connect the stool in the lower right corner to the painting above it are still visible.4. The finished version of this photo has a painting on the easel in the center of the image (Dali went in and later painted onto a print of the photograph from which all later printings and the 1981 edition were made). This photo was made without Dali's painting (note how the center of the easel is simply white).
The full story behind the photograph:
In 1948, Philippe Halsman, inspired by Dali's painting of his wife titled Leda Atomica, asked Dali to help create a similar scene in his New York studio. After four hours of jumping and throwing cats, Halsman got his shot. The strings that were used to suspend the easels were later painted out and Dali painted a version of the scene in Halsman's studio onto the easel in the center of the photograph. The photograph became Halsman's most famous collaboration with Dali and possibly his most prized image.
Please see the other very rare photographic collaboration between Dali and Halsman that we currently have image clarity with light surface imperfections (dings, creases and scratches) throughout, heaviest along upper edge. Red wax pencil crop marks/notations in all four corner margins (should be able to be wiped off). Pencil notations in lower and right margins. Creasing in all four corners (crease in lower right corner, causes small partial tear to the very corner of image) Hardly affects image and could easily be over-matted.(Please see scans for further information.)
