Fantastic& original Japanese photograph album, RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR, PORT ARTHUR (RYOJUN), c1905. Volume measures 5 X 7 1/4 inches (closed) and has 57 photographs, including some rare images of Chinese Dignitaries, Sunken Russian Warships in Port Arthur, Trains, Railway Stations, Early Airplanes, Several photos of Baseball in China & Korea (quite early & rare). Scenes of Ryojun, etc. The photo of the sunken Russian warships (see scan #2) shows the POBIEDA (left in the photo) and the POLTAVA (right). The Pobieda was launched at the Baltic Works St. Petersburg, 1900. It was equipped with double tier 6" casemate guns. On April 13, 1904, it struck a mine. In the photo we can see her guns trained abeam to correct the list & prevent capsizing. In the background we can see the Naval Oil Terminal in flames. The Poltava was a Petropavlovsk class battleship weighing 11,000 tons. Both of these ships were repaired and became part of the Imperial Japanese Naval Fleet. In scan #4 we can see a rare image of the Blockader HOKOKU MARU (ex Chinese Li Liang). The images of the trains are early and rare photos of the South Manchurian Railway (see scans #6 & #7). Japanese came into control of RYOJUN following the defeat of Chinese forces at PYONYANG, Korea in September, 1894. The Japanese First & Second Armies converged on the Liaodong Peninsula, and, recognizing the port's strategic position in the Yellow Sea, seized administrative control of Port Arthur. Ten years later, Japan fought Russia for complete control of RYOJUN and the railway connecting it, the South Manchurian Railway, formerly the Chinese Eastern Railway. A great album of rare Meiji photographs of this turbulent region. Original covers, good shape for the age & GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC.
