GENERAL HEMAN SWIFT
(1733-1814)
Col. Swift aiding a wounded General Lafayette
On March 27,
1758, Heman Swift was commissioned by Thomas Fitch, Governor of
Connecticut, first Lieutenant, Ninth Company, under Col. David Worcester, for the invasion of Canada and served through the French & Indian War.
Heman
Swift enlisted on June 20, 1776, served with General Gates around Fort
Ticonderoga in 1776 and was the Colonel who commanded the 7th Regiment
of Connecticut Line in the Continental Army in 1777 though 1781.Swift was Colonel Connecticut State Regiment, July to December, 1776; Colonel 7th Connecticut, January 1, 1777; transferred to 2d Connecticut, January 1, 1781;
retained as Colonel of the Consolidated Connecticut Regiment in June,
1783; Brevet Brigadier General, September 30, 1783, and served to
December, 1783.
At
the Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777, Col. Swift removed his
sash to wrap it around the waist of a wounded General Lafayette. See image above. The bloodstained
sash is displayed at Fraunces Tavern in New York City. Lafayette was so
touched by Swift’s gesture that at the end of the war he presented to
Swift his epaulets, chapeau, sword, and sash.
Swift was a member of General George Washington's staff and wintered with him at Valley Forge 1777-1778.
He took the Oath of Allegiance at Valley Forge in 1778.The 7th Connecticut Regiment saw action in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth.Swift's
Regiment was stationed in the Hudson Highlands (from where he wrote
this document), then ordered to Yorktown with Swift in command of the
Connecticut Light Infantry Battalion under
General Lafayette's Division in 1781 and served in the
Battle of Yorktown.Swift commanded the 2nd Regiment of the Connecticut
Line in the Continental Army from 1781-1783 and was promoted to
Brevet Brigadier-General by Act of Congress on September 30, 1783.

I was the handwriting expert contacted in the "1775 Almanac" episode on the PBS series "History Detectives" which was televised on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. I was asked to identify the writer of the notes handwritten on the pages of the almanac, notes that recorded, among other events, the Battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. The unknown owner of the almanac had used it as a diary. Filmed in the Library of Congress, I compared the writing in the almanac with a signed letter handwritten in 1779. Click on the following link and you can see the entire "1775 Almanac" episode. --- Herman Darvick
