AS ALWAYS: Everything is GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC... and sold without reserve!!Daniel Sickles (1825 - 1914), Union general, won the Medal of Honor for Gettysburg where he lost a leg. Prior to the war he was the first American ever acquitted of murder on grounds of temporary insanity after he shot Francis Scott Key's son for seducing his wife. Autograph Letter Signed, two-pages on embossed personal stationery, New York, February 1, 1911, to General James Grant Wilson. Wilson (1832-1914), a Civil War general, spent his post-war years writing and editing important works – including contributions from Sickles: “Dear General, Gen. King seems to be under the impression that if he accepts your invitation to go to the dinner of the “Lincoln Fellowship” Society he must become a member of the society and pay for his dinner. If this is necessary, pray let me know and I will cheerfully pay for his dinner and my own also. I suggested to you that Gen. K. be invited because I was sure he would make an interesting speech, and also because he would be my escort to Delmonico’s and in my return to my residence, as I do not go anywhere alone at night. I am sending to you, under separate cover your Buchanan pamphlet. Sincerely yours, D. Sickles.” NOTE: (Photograph of Daniel Sickles, shown. Not included in lot.)Typical aging shown with creases, else fine condition. Needless to say, this is a genuine original, period piece, not a copy or reproduction.
